TEUGGOG SERIES

Established Series

PCS, JYH

15 Nov., 1979

The Teuggog series are members of the fine silty, mixed, mesic family of Anthraquic Hapludalfs [Hydragric Anthrosols (Dystric Oxyaquic Siltic) classified by WRB]. These soils have dark gray silt loam Ap1 horizons with brown mottles, grayish brown silt loam Ap2 horizons with strong brown mottles, brown silty clay loam BAt horizons with strong brown mottles, light olive brown silty clay loam Bt1 horizons with strong brown mottles, brown silty clay loam Bt2 horizons with strong brown mottles, and yellowish brown silty clay loam C horizons with strong brown mottles. These soils are on mountain foot slopes in anorthosite geology.

Typifying Pedon: Teuggog silt loam-paddy rice (Colors are for moist soil).

  Slope: 7-15%

  Elevation: 138 m above m.s.l.

  Soil moisture regime: Udic (Anthraquic)

  Soil temperature regime: Mesic

  Parent material: Colluvium from anorthosite

Diagnostic features: An ochric epipedon from a depth of 0 to 26 cm and an argillic horizon from a depth of 26 to 88 cm (An anthraquic horizon from a depth of 0 to 26 cm and a hydragric horizon from a depth of 26 to 88 cm by WRB).

  Described by: Song, K. C., D. C. Noh, and S. J. Jung,  1 March, 2011.

Morphological properties of typifying pedon.

Ap1 - 0 to 13 cm. Dark gray (2.5Y 4/1) silt loam; few fine prominent brown (7.5YR 4/4) mottles; weak medium platy structure; friable, sticky and plastic; many fine to medium roots; no pores; clear smooth boundary.

Ap2 - 13 to 26 cm. Grayish brown (2.5Y 5/2) silt loam; common fine prominent strong brown (7.5YR 4/6) mottles; weak medium platy structure; slightly firm, sticky and plastic; thin patch clay cutans; few fine roots; common fine pores; clear smooth boundary.

BAt - 26 to 35 cm. Brown (10YR 5/3) silty clay loam; many fine to medium prominent strong brown (7.5YR 5/6) mottles; moderate coarse prismatic structure; firm, very sticky and very plastic; thick patch clay cutans; few very fine roots; common fine pores; gradual smooth boundary.

Bt1 - 35 to 65 cm. Light olive brown (2.5Y 5/3) silty clay loam; common fine to medium prominent strong brown (7.5YR 4/6) mottles; weak coarse prismatic structure; firm, very sticky and very plastic; thick patch clay cutans; few very fine roots; common fine to medium pores; gradual smooth boundary.

Bt2 - 65 to 88 cm. Brown (2.5Y 5/3) silty clay loam; common fine to medium prominent strong brown (7.5YR 5/6) mottles; weak coarse prismatic structure; slightly firm, very sticky and very plastic; thick patch clay cutans; no roots; common fine pores; abrupt smooth boundary.

C - 88 to 160 cm. Yellowish brown (10YR 5/4) silty clay loam; common fine to medium distinct strong brown (7.5YR 5/6) mottles; structureless, massive; very sticky and very plastic; thick patch clay cutans; few fine to medium pores; common medium to coarse very dark grayish brown Mn concretions.

The typifying pedon has an ochric epipedon from a depth of 0 to 26 cm, an argillic horizon from a depth of 26 to 88 cm, and a base saturation (by sum of cations) of 35% or more at 125 cm below the upper boundary of the argillic horizon. That can be classified as Alfisol. It has aquic conditions for some time in normal years in one or more horizons within 50 cm of the mineral soil surface, but does not have 50 percent or more redox depletions with chroma of 2 or less within the upper 12.5 cm of the argillic horizon. Therefore it can be classified as Udalf. It meets the requirements of Hapludalf. It has anthraquic codition and keys out as Anthraquic Hapludalf.

Typifying pedon has fine silty particle-size class and mesic soil temperature class. Therefore it can be classified as fine silty, mixed, mesic family of Anthraquic Hapludalf.

Type Location: About 200 meters north of the Teuggog Elementary School, Teug Ri, Geumseo Myeon, Sancheong Gun, Gyeongsangnam Do (127° 50' 50.7'', 35° 26' 24.0'').

Range in Characteristics: These soils have ochric epipedons and argillic horizons. The solum thickness ranges from 50 to 100 cm and depth to hard rock is more than 3 meters. Base saturation is less than 60 percent. Ap horizons are gray loam or silt loam with yellowish brown, or strong brown mottles. Bt horizons are yellowish brown, dark grayish brown, or brown silty clay loam with gray, light yellowish brown, light olive brown, or brown mottles. C horizons are yellowish brown silty clay loam or silt loam with light olive brown and manganese mottles.

Competing Series and Their Differentiae: These are the Cheongwon, Ogdong, and Chilgog soils.  The Cheongwon soils occur on alluvial plains. The Ogdong soils have fine loamy texture class.  The Chilgog soils have fine loamy texture class and are derived from acid crystalline materials.

Setting: The Teuggog soils are on mountain foot slopes in anorthosite geology. The slope ranges from 7 to 30 percent.

Principal Associated Soils: These are the Ogdong in similar positions, the Geumseo in lower local valleys. The Sancheong and Hwasan soils in higher residual rolling to hilly positions.

Drainage and Permeability: Moderately well drained; very slow permeability; medium runoff.

Use and Vegetation: Used for rice.

Distribution and Extent: On the southern parts of the country in anorthosite geology.

Series Established: Sancheong Gun, Gyeongsangnam Do, 1978. Revised, Sancheong Gun, Gyeongsangnam Do, 2011.
