MUI SERIES

Established Series

HSY, KBJ, UKT, JFD

20 November, 1969

The Mui series are members of the coarse loamy, mixed, mesic family of Typic Humudepts [Cambic Umbrisols (Humic Alumic Hyperdystric) classified by WRB]. These soils have very dark grayish brown gravelly sandy loam A horizons, dark brown gravelly sandy loam BA horizons, dark yellowish brown gravelly sandy loam Bw horizons, yellowish brown gravelly loamy sand C1 horizons, and yellowish brown gravelly loamy sand C2 horizons. They are developed in mountain foot slopes derived from granitic materials.

Typifying pedon: Mui stony loam-radish (Colors are for moist soil).

  Slope: 15-30%

  Elevation: 848 m above m.s.l.

  Soil moisture regime: Udic

  Soil temperature regime: Mesic

  Parent material: Colluvium from granite

Diagnostic features: An umbric epipedon from a depth of 0 to 21 cm and a cambic horizon from a depth of 36 to 65 cm (An umbric horizon from a depth of 0 to 21 cm and a cambic horizon from a depth of 36 to 65 cm by WRB).

Morphological properties of typifying pedon.

A - 0 to 21 cm. Very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) gravelly sandy loam; weak fine to medium granular structure: friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; common fine to medium roots; common fine pores; common very fine micas; 15% gravels; gradual wavy boundary.

AB - 21 to 36 cm. Dark brown (10YR 3/3) gravelly sandy loam; weak medium subangular blocky structure; friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; common very fine roots; common fine pores; common very fine micas; 30% gravels; clear wavy boundary.

Bw - 36 to 65 cm. Dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/4) gravelly sandy loam; weak coarse subangular blocky structure; friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; few very fine roots; few fine pores; few very fine micas; 25% gravels and cobbles; clear wavy boundary.

C1  - 65 to 91 cm. Yellowish brown (10YR 5/6) gravelly loamy sand; structureless, massive; non sticky and non plastic; few very fine roots; few fine pores; few very fine micas; 15% gravels; gradual wavy boundary.

C2  - 91 to 160 cm. Yellowish brown (10YR 5/4) gravelly loamy sand; structureless, massive; non sticky and non plastic; no roots; few fine pores; common very fine micas; 20% gravels.

The typifying pedon has an umbric epipedon from a depth of 0 to 21 cm and a cambic horizon from a depth of 36 to 65 cm. That can be classified as Inceptisol. It has an udic soil moisture regime and keys out as Udept. It has an umbric epipedon and keys out as Humudept. Also it meets the requirements of Typic Humudept. The typifying pedon has in the fraction less than 75 mm in diameter, 15% or more particles with diameters of 0.1 to 75 mm and in the fine-earth fraction, less than 18% clay at the particle-size control section and has mesic soil temperature regime. Therefore it can be classified as coarse loamy, mixed, mesic family of Typic Humudept.

Type Location: About 800 meters north-west of the Nunggot Village, Chahang Ri, Daegwanryeong Myeon, Pyeongchang Gun, Gangwon Do (128° 40' 31.1'', 37° 43' 2.7'').

Range in Characteristics: These soils have umbric epipedons and cambic horizons. Solum thickness ranges from 50 to 100 cm. Depth to bedrock is more than 2 meters probably ranging to about 6 meters. Reaction is strongly to medium acid and the base saturation is low. A horizons are dark brown, very dark brown, very dark grayish brown, or black stony loam or sandy loam. The cambic B horizons are strong brown, brown, dark yellowish brown, or yellowish brown stony, cobbly and gravelly sandy loam, loam, sandy clay loam. C horizons are somewhat stratified yellowish brown, dark yellowish brown, strong brown, or yellow sand, loamy sand, or sandy loam with varying amounts of slightly weathered granitic stones, cobbles, gravels, and boulders.

Competing Series and Their Differentiae: These are the Imog, Chugye, and Woljeong soils. The Imog soils occur on local valleys and are free of stones and cobbles. The Chugye soils occur on alluvial fans. The Woljeong soils occur on mountainous areas.

Setting: The Mui soils are formed in stony coarse loamy mountain colluvium in granitic areas with cool humid climate. Frost free days are approximately 170 to 180. Slopes range from 2 to 30 percent and the dominant slopes are 7 to 15 percent.

Principal Associated Soils: These are the Imog, Chahang, and Woljeong series. The Imog soils occur in local alluvial positions while the Chahang and Woljeong soils occur in residual positions above the Mui soils.

Drainage and Permeability: Well drained. Permeability is moderate or rapid and runoff is probably slow due to rapid permeability.

Use and Vegetation: Most areas are cultivated for crops such as corn, soybean, barley, radish, cabbage, and red pepper.

Distribution and Extent: The Mui soils are of moderate extent and occur in the high mountaineous foot slopes in the northeastern parts of the country.

Series Established: Pyeongchang Gun, Gangwon Do, 1968. Revised, Pyeongchang Gun, Gangwon Do, 2008.
