MARYEONG SERIES |
Established Series UKT, JFD 18 November, 1969 |
The Maryeong series are members of the coarse loamy, mixed, mesic family of Oxyaquic Udifluvents [Fluvic Hydragric Anthrosols (Eutric Oxyaquic) classified by WRB]. These soils have moderately thick dark reddish brown Ap horizons with few mottles. C horizons are deep dark reddish brown gravelly sandy loam with gray mottles. They are developed in narrow valley alluvial plains in materials washed from reddish shale and sandstone soils.
Typifying pedon : Maryeong loam-rice pdddy (Field description, Imha Reservoir Survey, profile No. 4; colors are for moist soil).
Slope: 2-7%
Elevation: m above m.s.l.
Soil moisture regime: Udic (Anthraquic)
Temperature regime: Mesic
Parent material: Local alluvium
Diagnostic features: An ochric epipedon from a depth of 0 to 30 cm (An anthraquic horizon from a depth of 0 to 30 cm and a hydragric horizon from a depth of 30 to 120 cm by WRB).

Morphological properties of typifying pedon. |
Ap1 - 0 to 10 cm. Brown (7.5YR 4/2) loam; structureless, massive; friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; many fine rice roots; abrupt smooth boundary.
Ap2 - 10 to 30 cm. Dark reddish brown (5YR 3/3) gravelly loam; weak medium to coarse platy and blocky structure; common fine to medium faint strong brown (7.5YR 5/8) mottles; firm, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; 15 percent slightly weathered mixed reddish brown shale and sandstone gravels; few fine pores; few fine roots; abrupt smooth boundary.
C1 - 30 to 80 cm. Dark reddish brown (5YR 4/4) gravelly sandy loam; few fine faint strong brown (7.5YR 5/8) and grayish brown (2.5Y 5/2) mottles; structureless, massive; few fine pores; 15 percent gravels as above; no roots; abrupt smooth boundary.
C2 - 80 to 120 cm. Dark reddish brown (5YR 4/4) to yellowish brown (10YR 5/4) gravelly sandy loam; common fine faint very dark brown (10YR 2/2) and few fine faint grayish brown (10YR 5/2) mottles; structureless, massive; firm, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; 10 percent slightly weathered mixed gravels and cobbles.
Type Location: About 200 meters south of Maryeong Ri, Imdong Myeon, Andong city, Gyeongsangbug Do.
Range in Characteristics: These soils have ochric epipedons. Depth to hard rock is probably more than 3 meters. Base saturation is more than 60 percent. Reaction is slightly acid to neutral. 10 to 35 percent slightly weathered reddish brown shale and sandstone gravels and some cobbles occur and generally increase with depth. Ap horizons are brown, reddish brown, or dark reddish brown gravelly loam or fine sandy loam. C horizons are dark reddish brown, reddish brown, brown, weak red, or reddish gray gravelly sandy loam or loam with grayish brown mottles.
Competing Series and Their Differentiae: These include the Sadu, Deogcheon, and Deoggye soils. The Sadu soils are Aquic Subgroups, have sandy over loamy texture class, and occur on fluvio-marine plains. The Deogcheon soils are Typic Subgroups, have loamy skeletal texture class, and occur on alluvial plains. The Deoggye soils are Typic Subgroups, have sandy skeletal texture class, and occur on alluvial fans.
Setting: The Maryeong soils occur on nearly level to very gently sloping narrow valley alluvial plains in materials washed mostly from reddish brown shale and sandstone materials. Dominant slopes are 2 to 7 percent and the range is from 0 to 7 percent.
Principal Associated Soils: The Tongcheon, Samam, Habin, and Buyeo soils are associated. The Tongcheon and Samam soils occur in somewhat similar phsiographic positions. The Habin and Buyeo soils are associated in residual positions.
Drainage and Permeability: Moderately well drained. Permeability is moderate and runoff is slow or very slow.
Use and Vegetation: Most areas are used for paddy rice during wet summer and barley during dry winter periods.
Distribution and Extent: The Maryeong soils are of small extent and are distributed mainly in the southeastern parts of the country.
Series Established: Andong Gun, Gyeongsangbug Do, 1969.
