HAERI SERIES |
Established Series YSJ, UKT 7 August, 1975 |
The Haeri series are members of the mixed, mesic, family of Typic Quartzipsamments [Haplic Arenosols (Eutric) classified by WRB]. These soil have brown fine sand A horizons, dark yellowish brown fine sand C1 horizons, and dark yellowish brown fine sand C2 horizons. These soils occur on coastal plains which are deposited by wind and sea water on the beach areas.
Typifying Pedon: Haeri sand-forest (Colors are for moist soils.)
Slope: 2-7%
Elevation: 19 m above m.s.l.
Soil moisture regime: Udic
Soil temperature regime: Mesic
Parent material: Marine deposits
Diagnostic features: An ochric epipedon from a depth of 0 to 15 cm.
Described by: Song, K. C., D. C. Noh, and B. K. Hyun, 20 Sep., 2012.

Morphological properties of typifying pedon. |
A - 0 to 15 cm. Brown (10YR 4/3) fine sand; weak fine granular structure; loose, non sticky and non plastic; many medium to coarse roots; many very fine micas; few worm holes; gradual wavy boundary.
C1 - 15 to 36 cm. Dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/4) fine sand; structureless, single grained; loose, non sticky and non plastic; common fine to coarse roots; no pores; many very fine micas; few worm holes; gradual smooth boundary.
C2 - 36 to 200 cm. Dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/4) fine sand; structureless, single grained; loose, non sticky and non plastic; few fine to medium roots; no pores; many very fine micas; few worm holes.
The typifying pedon has an ochric epipedon from a depth of 0 to 15 cm. But it does not have other diagnostic horizons. Therefore it can be classified as Entisol. It has less than 35% rock fragments and a texture class of loamy fine sand or coarser in all layers within the particle-size control section. It keys out as Psamment. It has, in the 0.02 to 2.0 mm fration within the particle-size control section, a total of more than 90% resistant minerals. It can be classified as Quartzipsammnent. Also it meets the requirements of Typic Quartzipsamment. The typifying pedon has mesic soil temperature regime, and can be classified as mixed, mesic family of Typic Quatzipsamment.
Type Location: About 50 meters south of the Sinduri-heotjib, Sindu Ri, Wonbug Myeon, Taean Gun, Chungcheongnam Do (126o 11' 9.4'', 36o 50' 12.9'').
Range in Characteristics: These soils have ochric epipedons. Depth to bed rock is more than 3 meters and probably ranges from 3 to 5 meters. Reaction is very strongly to medium acid. A horizons are brown, dark yellowish brown, or light yellowish brown fine sand, loamy sand, loamy fine sand, or sandy loam. C horizons are light yellowish brown, yellowish brown, very pale brown, or brownish yellow sand or loamy sand. These soils consist of mostly fine quartz grits.
Competing Series and Their Differentiae: These are the Gapa, Hwabong, Nagdong, Geumcheon, and Bicheon soils. The Gapa soils comprise of sea shell materials and are high soil reaction. The Hwabong soils are developed in continental river sides. The Nagdong soils are loamy fine sand throughout the profiles and occur on the alluvial plains. The Geumcheon soils are worse drainage and are developed in main river sides. The Bichecn soils are fine gravelly loamy coarse sand texture.
Setting: The Haeri soils occur on beach and sea levee areas. They are derived from coarse textured materials by sea and wind. Slopes range from 0 to 7 percent and dominant slopes are 0 to 2 percent.
Principal Associated Soils: The Yeompo, Gwanghwhal, Mangyeong, and Chunpo soils are associated. These soils are usually associated with similar physiographic positions.
Drainage and Permeability: Somewhat excessively drained and very rapid permeability. Runoff is slow to very slow.
Use and Vegetation: Most of these soils are used for idle land and small areas are cultivated barley and wheat for upland crops. Some areas are growing native pine trees.
Distribution and Extent: The Haeri soils are of small extent and occupied along the coastal beach in the south western parts of the country.
Series Established: Gochang Gun, Jeollabug Do, 1974. Revised, Taean Gun, Chungcheongnam Do, 2012.
