GORYEONG SERIES

Established Series

PCS, JYH

4 July, 1978

The Goryeong series are members of the fine silty, mixed, mesic family of Typic Endoaquepts [Gleyic Hydragric Anthrosols (Eutric Siltic) classified by WRB]. These soils have thin olive gray and greenish gray silt loam Ap horizon with pale brown and strong brown mottles, thick greenish gray and dark gray silt loam and silty clay loam Bg horizons, and dark gray silty clay loam C horizons. They are on nearly level to sloping local valleys derived from sedimentary rocks.

Typifying Pedon: Goryeong silt loam-paddy rice (Field description Goryeong profile No. 26; colors are for moist soil).

  Slope: 2-7%

  Elevation:  m above m.s.l.

  Soil moisture regime: Aquic

  Soil temperature regime: Mesic

  Parent material: Local alluvium

Diagnostic features: An ochric epipedon from a depth of 0 to 20 cm and a cambic horizon from a depth of 40 to 65 cm (An anthraquic horizon from a depth of 0 to 40 cm and a hydragric horizon from a depth of 40 to 65 cm by WRB).

Morphological properties of typifying pedon.

Ap1 - 0 to 10 cm. Olive gray (5Y 5/2) silt loam; few fine distinct pale brown (10YR 6/3) mottles; structureless, puddled; slightly sticky and slightly plastic; many fine roots; clear smooth boundary.

Ap2 - 10 to 20 cm. Greenish gray (5GY 5/1) silt loam; few fine to medium strong brown (7.5YR 5/6) mottles; structureless, massive; slightly sticky and slightly plastic; common fine pores; common fine roots; abrupt smooth boundary.

BAg - 20 to 40 cm. Greenish gray (5GY 5/1) silty clay loam; moderate coarse angular blocky structure; sticky and plastic; common fine pores; few fine roots; abrupt smooth boundary.

Bg - 40 to 65 cm. Dark gray (5Y 5/1) silty clay loam; moderate coarse prismatic structure; sticky and plastic; common fine pores; few fine roots; clear smooth boundary.

Cg  - 65 to 120 cm.  Dark gray (5Y 4/1) silty clay loam; structureless, massive; very sticky and plastic; no roots.

Type Location: About 100 m. south-east of Seongdong Primary School, Seongdong Ri, Gaejin Myeon, Goryeong Gun, Gyeongsangbug Do.

Range in Characteristics: These soils have ochric epipedons and cambic horizons. The solum thickness ranges from 50 to 100 cm. Depth to hard rock is more than 3 meters. Base saturation is more than 60 percent. Reaction is medium acid to neutral. Ap horizons are thin, olive gray or greenish gray silt loam or loam with few fine pale brown or strong brown mottles. Bg horizons are thick greenish gray, dark gray or gray silt loam or silty clay loam. C horizons are dark gray, olive gray or gray silt loam or silty clay loam.

Competing Series and Their Differentiae: These are the Ogcheon, Sugye, Yuga, Gagog, and Yecheon soils. The Ogcheon soils are fine loamy textural family and derived from granitic or porphyritic materials. The Sugye soils are on broad alluvial plains. The Yuga and Gagog soils are imperfectly drained soils. The Yecheon soils are coarse loamy soils.

Setting: The Goryeong soils are on local alluvial valley derived from shale materials. The dominant slopes are 0 to 2 percent and ranges from 0 to 7 percent.

Principal Associated Soils: These are the Daegu, Habin, and Sirye soils in the upper residual positions, the Yuga in somewhat higher positions.

Drainage and Permeability: Poorly drained; slow runoff; slow permeability.

Use and Vegetation: These soils are used for paddy field.

Distribution and Extent: The Goryeong soils are of small extent distributed on the sedimentary geology areas.

Series Established: Goryeong Gun, Gyeongsangbug Do, 1977.
