AGYANG SERIES |
Established Series PCS, JYH 20 Feb., 1979 |
The Agyang series are members of the fine, mesic family of Ultic Hapludalfs [Cutanic Luvisols (Profondic Siltic Chromic) classified by WRB]. These soils have brown to dark brown silt loam Ap horizons; strong brown silty clay loam Bt horizons and yellowish brown clay loam C horizons. These soils are on mountain foot slopes derived from acidic crystalline rocks.
Typifying Pedon: Agyang silty clay loam-barley (Field description Hadong Gun profile No. 43; colors are for moist soil).
Slope: 7-15%
Elevation: m above m.s.l.
Soil moisture regime: Udic
soil temperature regime: Mesic
Parent material: Colluvium
Diagnostic features: An ochric epipedon from a depth of 0 to 15 cm and an argillic horizon from a depth of 15 to 120 cm (An argic horizon from a depth of 15 to 120 cm by WRB).

Morphological properties of Agyang series. |
Ap - 0 to 15 cm. Brown to dark brown (7.5YR 4/4) silt loam; moderate medium granular structure; friable, sticky and plastic; common fine pores; many fine roots; abrupt smooth boundary.
Bt1 - 15 to 36 cm. Strong brown (7.5YR 5/6) silty clay loam; moderate medium subangular blocky structure; firm, very sticky and very plastic; thin clay skins on ped faces; common fine and few coarse pores; common fine roots; clear smooth boundary.
Bt2 - 36 to 57 cm. Strong brown (7.5YR 5/8) silty clay loam; moderate coarse subangular blocky structure; firm, very sticky and very plastic; thin clay skins on ped faces; common fine and few coarse pores; common fine roots; clear smooth boundary.
BCt - 57 to 120 cm. Strong brown (7.5YR 5/6) silty clay loam; weak coarse subangular blocky structure; firm, very sticky and very plastic; thin clay skins on ped faces; common fine pores; few very fine roots.
Type Location: Road side of 100 m. east of Maegye Ri, Agyang Myeon, Hadong Gun, Gyeongsangnam Do.
Range in Characteristics: These soils have ochric epipedons and argillic horizons. The solum thickness ranges from 100 to 150 cm and depth to hard rock is more than 3 meters. Reaction is strongly to medium acid. Base saturation is more than 35 percent. These soils have brown to dark brown, brown or dark brown silt loam or silty clay loam Ap horizon; strong brown, or yellowish brown silty clay loam or clay loam Bt horizons and yellowish brown or strong brown clay loam or loam C horizon.
Competing Series and Their Differentiae: These are the Anryong, Gaghwa, Bangog, Galjeon and Pyeongjeon soils. The Anryong soils are fine loamy texture family with gravels. The Gaghwa soils are red colors with gravels. The Bangog soils are higher clay content and are from unconsolidated gray shale materials. The Galjeon soils have lower chroma and are formed from anorthosite geology. The Pyeongjeon soils are higher soil reaction and derived from limestone parent materials.
Setting: The Agyang soils occur on mountain foot slopes derived from acidic rocks. The slopes range from 2 to 30 percent. Dominant slopes are 7 to 15 percent.
Principal Associated Soils: These are the Anryong in similar positions, Yongji in lower positions, and Asan soils in higher mountain residual positions.
Drainage and Permeability: Well drained; very slow permeability; slow to moderate runoff.
Use and Vegetation: Upland crops.
Distribution and Extent: On mountain foot slopes of relatively high mountainous areas in Hadong Gun. These soils are inextensive.
Series Established: Hadong Gun, Gyeongsangnam Do, 1978.
